Supermama's Thrifty Hair Detangler

The Supermama in question had six children in five years (two sets of twins)! And she homeschooled them!! She has all the super powers, including the one where you can see what mischief your children are getting up to from two rooms away. She is one of my best buddies, and has come up with many a frugal save.

This one was when I needed hair help for Rosy, who at eight, had just started ballet and needed a twice weekly ballet bun, which meant taming the wild, birds' nest hair. What to do? One of the ballet mums pointed me in the direction of an expensive hair product from the chemist, but luckily I saw Supermama first, and she passed on the secret of her four girls' immaculate blonde ponytails - a couple of squirts of conditioner in a spray bottle filled with water. That's it. Simple and brilliant. I have been refilling this bottle for five years now.

Oh, and if you add a couple of drops of lavender oil, it repels nits. Ask me how I needed to find that out! How long do you think it took Posy to contract her first case of nits after she started school? Six weeks. Another reason to homeschool. Anyways, a couple of squirts of lavender detangler when putting up the morning ponytail is a marvellous preventative.

So, tangly hair, or wild, hairbrush-averse toddler? Try this thrifty hair detangler. And cheers to Supermama!

No ballerinas over here with my boys, but the threat of lice always looms large. It seems to be a thing these days--where did they come from? I don't recall anybody having lice when I was a kid, but now everyone gets them, even at our hoity-toity prep school. So far we've avoided the little buggers (knock on wood), but it's nice to know we can actually fight them off.

Now, I'm off to search your site for those sourdough bread posts ... I'm going to try making some myself!

My sisters daughter Sabrina doesn't have hair, she has wool. My brother inherited the wool in our generation and Sabrina drew the short straw in ours. Madeline's hair turns into wool if she allows it to grow to any length and so we are all well aware of the dangers of trying to tame "the do". Sabrina was a ballet student as well and all of that frizz had to be stuffed into a bun. I think my sister would have loved to know about this fix as I think she was personally paying for that well known UBER expensive detangler company to stay in business ;). I will pass this on to Madeline but I think she has decided to go with the short do for the near future :)

Thankfully, we haven't had to deal with lice, but the threat of it has often been in the back of my mind.

What a super-clever Supermama! Luckily I am past the head lice stage. We got them regularly, and the horror, the horror when I caught them once. One day I might share the story of my mortification. Let me just say I became a local expert on head lice.

I will share the detangler recipe with my nieces.

Hey ladies, isn't parenting fun!
Frances, I put my sourdough starter in the fridge before we went away, and haven't got it out yet, so that's today's job. Did I kill it? Will let you know. The King Arthur Flour website was the goods for the recipes - have fun!
Short hair is such a god send, though it's getting long enough now to get wooly. I'm running out of pump packs though - I have two, one with a vinegar mix, and the other with rose water and lavender, which I don't actually use as an air freshener often, but I don't know what else to do with the scented mix!

What a great idea! I have passed your tip on to my daughter as our 3yeqr old grqnddqughter's hair gets terribly tangled and Caroline uses a product she buys specially. This would work out much cheaper! Like the lavender idea too. Apparently they had tried a professional product containing tea tree oil to protect from nits but little girl didn't like the smell!
